Reinaldo Arenas was born in Holgu n, Oriente, Cuba in 1943. On

December 7, 1990, he ended his life and in a letter he left behind, he

held Fidel Castro responsible for this final decision. He is considered

one of the best Cuban writers of the twentieth century.

El Portero was the literary event in France in 1988. The novel

tells the unusual adventures of a doorman in a luxury building in

Manhattan, New York. This novel was one of the three finalist of the

Medicis Prize and which was reviewed in newspapers such as Le

Monde, Liberation, Le Figaro, Nuevo D a, El Nuevo Herald and

others. The Novelle Observateur described the novel: Arenas has

created an enchanted world full of strange realities and a superb baroque

delirium.
