Description

Library of Congress Control Number: 2010916286 Many children live in comfortable surroundings and are protected from the plight of the homeless. Written for grades 3 to 6, this unique book is designed to help children develop a positive attitude toward the homeless. The child is invited to draw pictures of scenes described in the book and to talk about their emotions. The homeless are often ignored or treated as invisible, and this attitude is developed in childhood as children, for their own safety, are taught to avoid looking at or speaking to the homeless. While children are not encouraged to approach the homeless without adult supervision, this book allows children to begin to see the homeless as real people and to develop a sense of empathy for homeless people and the trouble they experience. Illustrations for this volume were provided by the author, and children also have an opportunity to submit their own drawings for publication in future volumes of the book. A version of this book with blank pages for the child to draw his or her own scenes described in the book is entitled, "Who Are Homeless People? a drawing book of stories for children.
