About the Author

DON FREEMAN (1908-1978) was born in San Diego and moved to New York City to study fine arts, making his living as a jazz trumpet player. One night, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway that he lost his trumpet. At that moment he decided to devote his talents to art full-time. At the time of his death, The Chicago Tribune said, "Don Freeman was one of those fortunate ones who could draw and write with the same affectionate charm and simple directions to which a child reacts immediately.
