Description

Lullaby Fires in the Waking Bay is Jive's debut poetry collection that explores societal expectations, gender nonconformity, and loss. In an eclectic style, Jive showcases genderqueer celebrations, the feeling of not knowing who you are, and the acceptance of death.

It is a joyful letter to the Philippines, a spotlight for youth who feel unheard, and an elegy.

Lullaby fires spark after young people spend so long not knowing how decide anything for themselves, after pearls of trauma form, and after they do everything wrong. The bay, as in body of water, is personified as the adult who helps them learn how to end their tantrums, how to prevent them from unleashing their anger on others, and how to return home. Every morning the bay begins its lessons and presents the hope of a better future, hence "waking." Everyone has a story and so do the fires. Despite the flames' wails they are lullabies in and of themselves.
